Free internet telephony that just works (sometimes).

“Free internet telephony that just works” is Skype’s motto. The fact is people’s expectation toward IP telephony is so low that any such claims never seem to get much attention when in fact it just doesn’t work well. It’s surprising to note that even paying users do not bother to complain when it’s internet telephony that they are using.

I am Skype user, both free version and non-free one (SkypeOut). It worked for sometimes, but never quite well. Now it almost never works properly, both the free service and the pay service. Today, for example, I couldn’t get it to work at all, both free and pay Skype. So, what should I do? Ask Skype to return my money? Hmm.

VoIP business is perhaps easier than I thought. Where else we could get this kind of forgiving attitude from customer toward service provider with product that never seems to work properly…

NOTE: Don’t bother asking me to check my internet connection, I use 100Mbps fiber optics at work and 8Mbps ADSL at home, with actual throughputs million times of typical voice codec’s bit rate.

UPDATE: Today (Sept 15 2005) I made three calls to same number, as well as one calls each to two different numbers, using SkypeOut. All of the calls went unanswered. I was suspicious, so I used regular phone to call one of the numbers (actually all of the numbers reside on the same house) and it was immediately answered. I was told that they only got one call, but only 3-4 rings and the call was immediately terminated when they took the phone. Wow terrible Skype! Actually in the past I also often experienced Skype’s ringing while I was already talking with the person I was calling… so Skype’s signaling is very, very unreliable. Yes, it “just works”, like crazy;)
