Here are the tools I am using to for genealogy:

Use Personal Ancestral File (PAF) to create the genealogical data itself. Using PAF Export data to GEDCOM, then use Legacy for creating many difference kinds of outputs. Use Java-based Genj for web- and desktop-based browsing. PHPGedView allows multi-user PHP-based web browsing of GEDCOM data.

GedLink is a simpler alternative to PAF for genealogy data creation.

Use Circle to create circle charts (the link is broken now).

If GenJ and Circle complain when opening GEDCOM file created by PAF, the cause might be inappropriate encoding. Do not use UTF-8, instead use Unicode. PHPGedView, however, wants UTF-8, so export to UTF-8 instead from PAF if the resulting GEDCOM file is to be used with PHPGedView.

Project Overview

For over ten years this engineering team have been leading Sun’s MPEG standards activities. Sun was recently recognized as holding one of the essential patents (MPEG-J) required to implement the critical systems elements of the MPEG-4 standard. We also hold leadership positions in the Internet Streaming Media Alliance (ISMA), which is forging an alliance with Sun’s traditional competitors to provide an end-to-end, standards-based alternative to proprietary solutions. Vishy Swaminathan leads all the technical activities; Tom Jacobs is the President for ISMA. Gerard Fernando leads the Conformance/Compliance working group, which focuses on making our specifications real and valued within the industry.
